1833 Dubuque is chartered

Dubuque, Iowa is chartered in 1833 after Julien Dubuque’s death. Dubuque has been called the “Key City,” key to the west. Dubuque, Iowa has a rich art history stretching all the way back to its founding. The first museum west of the Mississippi is in Dubuque, Iowa; Smithsonian accredited. The history of art in Dubuque owes gratitude toward many of its residents through the years, many of them women.
